Reliable Performance Specifications
The next generation Subaru will have the same engine offerings as the previous generation. Buyers can choose the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter Boxer four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower or the turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer engine with 260 horsepower. Of course, all trims come standard with all-wheel drive. Both engines come with a continuously variable automatic transmission.
At this point, a 2023 Subaru Outback Hybrid is not yet available. The Outback delivers impressive fuel economy, especially for a station wagon with all-wheel drive. The EPA-estimated fuel rating on the 2.5-liter engine is 26/33 MPG, while the turbocharged engine produces an EPA-estimated 23/30 MPG.
As the Outback is a rugged vehicle ready for off-road fun, Subaru gave it 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Outback Wilderness trim gets 9.5 inches of ground clearance to enhance the off-road suspension, skid plates, and Snow and Mud drive models. When properly equipped, the 2.5-liter Outback can tow 2,700 pounds while the 2.4-liter version can tow 3,500 pounds.
